This is a step-by-step guide to changing the oil and oil filter on a Honda CRF250F. It is based on the author’s observations and experience changing the oil and oil filter on a 2022 Honda CRF250F and on information contained in the official Honda CRF250F service manual, 2021 (no. 61K9903) which covers model years 2019 - 2022. The author is not aware of any mechanical changes to the CRF250F for the model years 2023-2024, so this guide should apply to those as well.

It is recommended that you consult the Honda CRF250F owner’s manual and/or service manual.
By learning to change the oil and oil filter, you can save money, learn more about your bike, gain the satisfaction of maintaining your bike yourself, as well as saving yourself a lot of inconvenience. There is nothing technically challenging about the procedure. Use the correct tools and supplies for the job, and take your time. Read all of the instructions before beginning.
Supplies you may need
- 10W-30 or 10W-40 motorcycle oil (1.4+ litres)
- new Honda oil filter
- new O-ring for the oil filter cover
- new crush/sealing washer for the oil drain bolt
- clean funnel for adding oil to engine (optional if you're careful)
- funnel for pouring dirty oil into containers for disposal
- rags and/or shop towels
- disposable gloves (nitrile)
- drain pan or pail to drain used oil into
- newspaper or cardboard to protect floor from spills
- newspaper and tape to redirect oil from oil filter housing once opened
Tools you need or may find helpful
- torque wrench accurate at 12 and 24 N.m
- 12 mm socket and ratchet for removing the oil drain bolt
- 8 mm socket, ratchet and a 3-inch or 6-inch extension for the oil filter cover bolts
- possibly a pick for removing the oil filter cover O-ring
- possibly something for removing the oil filler cap/dipstick such as a Motion Pro timing plug wrench (works well), a large flat blade screw driver, or?
Information From Honda CRF250F Service Manual
Recommended service intervals for oil and oil filter replacementInitial: 1 month / 150 km / 100 mi
Then: every 6 months / 1000 km / 600 mi
Oil Drain Bolt Torque Spec: 24 N.m (18 lbf.ft)
Oil Filter Cover Bolt Torque Spec: 12 N.m (9 lbf.ft)
Recommended oil type: Pro Honda GN4 4-stroke oil or equivalent motorcycle oil,
API service classification: SG or higher (except oils labeled as energy conserving on the circular API service label),
JASO T903 standard: MA
Oil viscosity: SAE 10W-30 (10W-40 is also acceptable according to the owner's manual)
Oil capacity after draining, with filter replacement: 1.4 L (1.5 US qt)
Oil capacity after draining, without filter replacement: 1.4 L (1.5 US qt)
Service manual instructions
- Warm up the engine.
- Stop the engine and remove the oil filler cap/dipstick.
- Place a drain pan under the engine oil drain bolt to catch the oil.
- Remove the oil drain bolt and sealing washer.
- Drain the engine oil completely.
- Install a new sealing washer on the drain bolt.
- Apply engine oil to the drain bolt threads and seating surface (Road and Trail: there will be oil on the threads of the drain hole which will run down to the seating surface unless you wait a long time or wipe the oil away).
- Install and tighten the drain bolt/sealing washer to the specified torque: 24 N.m (18 lbf.ft).
- Remove the following: oil filter cover bolts, oil filter cover, O-ring, oil filter, oil filter spring.
- Apply grease to the oil filter contact area of the spring (Road and Trail: I don't know about this).
- Install the spring into a new oil filter (Road and Trail: I think they mean on the backside of the oil filter).
- Install the oil filter with the "OUT-SIDE" mark facing out. Note: installing the oil filter backwards with result in severe engine damage.
- Apply engine oil to the new O-ring and install it on the oil filter cover.
- Install the oil filter cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts securely (12 N.m / 9 lbf.ft).
- Fill the engine with the recommended engine oil
- Check the oil level (see below).
Checking The Oil Level (according to service manual)
- Hold the motorcycle upright (on level ground).
- Start the engine and let it idle for 3-5 minutes.
- Stop the engine and wait 2 - 3 minutes.
- Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe it off.
- Insert the oil filler cap/dipstick, but Do Not screw it in.
- Remove the filler cap/dipstick and check the oil level.
- If the oil level is below the lower mark on the dipstick, add the recommended oil to the crankcase.
- Check that the O-ring on the oil filler cap/dipstick is in good condition, and replace if necessary.
- Apply engine oil to the O-ring.
- Install the oil filler cap/dipstick.
